A long, long time ago in a decade far far away you will find the 1970’s.
Home to highly questionable fashion decisions and sweets (aka candy) that are now globally unobtainable.
It was also home to some marvellous television such as The Good Life, The Magic Roundabout and The Wombles.
And plastic products in just about every colour you can imagine especially every shade of brown.
Now you may ask, and justifiably so, what The Wombles, self-sufficiency in Surbiton, Dougal the Dog and brown plastic from about fifty years ago have got to do with a pocket review of a new fountain pen. Well other than brown plastic, nothing.
This is a quick pocket review of TWSBI’s latest Eco; the Caffe with bronze fittings.

First things first, other than the colour is there anything different about this incarnation of the Eco when compared to previous versions?
No, but like Sheldon, Leonard, Raj & Howard in The Big Bang Theory buying the latest version of The Mystic Warlords Of Ka’a we get excited about the new Eco, place our pre-orders and start counting down to release day.
So, what do I think of the Caffe Eco with bronze fittings?
Even though brown is not my favourite colour I do like it, the bronze nib and fittings nicely compliment the brown cap and end cap.

As with all TWSBI Eco’s this one fills easily and provides the nib with a good steady flow of ink enabling it to write smoothly from the off. Despite being left uncapped for varying amounts of time the Eco did not skip or hard start.
The Eco’s three sided section is comfortable to hold and write with; and for my nickel it’s more comfortable than that of the Lamy.
One of the things that impressed me is how accurately TWSBI have replicated the colour of coffee in plastic; it really is the colour of coffee.

So, the big question. Would I recommend it?
Yes.
Even though I’m not a fan of brown plastic I’m glad I added this one to my collection because I really do think the bronze nib and fittings make all the difference, they elevate the Eco from the everyday to something quite special.
