Fifty years ago (the 4th April 1975 to be precise) the BBC first aired The Good Life.
The story of Tom and Barbara Good attempting to live a self-sufficient life in middle class Surbiton and their long-suffering neighbours Margot and Jerry.
The programme ran for four series with the final episode being recorded before Her Majesty The Queen.
There is no doubt, given its success, that it could have run for more series but it was decided to quit while they were ahead and end on a high.
The cast went on to make other notable comedies such as “To The Manor Born” and “Yes Minister” followed by“Yes Prime Minister”.
It’s a great shame that the BBC do not make more of its archive of comedy especially when they reach such a notable anniversary.
But if you want to enjoy some gentle comedy from a different era head over the BBC IPlayer where you can, at time of writing, stream all of The Good Life.
As a footnote I really do recommend you try an episode or two because, even after fifty years, it is still as good and as funny as it ever was.
